Title:
System sounds stop after several minutes of use

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Not all sound playback is broken. When I first log in, I get system
sounds. After several minutes, the sounds are no longer available.
Yet if I view a video I can get sound. If I shutdown and reboot I get
sound back again. This is extended to inside CrossOver when playing
Eve Online. I get sounds for several minutes then the sound stops and
never comes back. This began AFTER a patch because about a month ago
this loss of sound (including Eve) did not happen.

  Reproduction:
After installing ubuntu on an EliteBook 8740w install all updates to bring it
to the current build.
Shutdown and wait a few minutes then reboot.
After login perform tasks that would activate a system sound (such as logoff
and login)
It will take about 2 minutes for the sound to stop.
