Then dhclient is started, assigning an address and route. For DNS dnsmasq is configured to listen on localhost, then resolv.conf is configured to use the localy running dns. The upstream dns servers address is silently discarded, breaking dns resolution. Moving network-manager out of control (by adding the interface to /etc/network/interfaces) removes dnsmasq, but makes the whole thing work again, because the upstream dns is now entered into /etc/resolv.conf.
