Title:
The new design makes maximized windows unusable
Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
I have just upgraded from ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 (and I would have
upgraded to 20.04 already if the stupid package manager weren't unable
to resolve some conflicts which are "holding back" packages).
An unbelievavly stupid mistake was made in the new design of windows.
When you maximize a window, the title bar used to be at the very top
of the screen, and the close/minimize/restore buttons used to be at
the top-left corner of the screen.
That means they had a property that in interface design has even a
name, "infinite width" or "infinite something", that is: you can move
the mouse all the way to the top and all the way to the left without
having to "stop at the right time" in order to "land" within the area
of the button, because the screen edges limit the mouse cursor.
Now, the title bar of the window is no longer at the very top of the
screen. At the top of the screen is a system bar. I mean that was
already there, but the window buttons used to be in it on the left, as
if the system bar at the top of the screen *was* the window title bar.
Now the window title bar is just below it, and the buttons have been
moved to the right (the fact that they have been moved from the left
to the right after decades being on the left is irritating AF, but
it's irrelevant here).
So now the buttons, while still at the horizintal edge of the screen,
are no longer at the corner of the screen, so when you "shoot" the
mouse pointer to go to their area, you cannot simply go as far as you
can and then click, you have to move a little bit down from the top in
order to click the buttons.
It's not just an aesthetic thing, it's a huge usablility thing. And
it's not just a matter of habits and getting used to, it's objectively
a step backwards (actually, it's a step in a completely new dimension,
one of stupidity).
It violates a very well known UI design principle that has been
established for decades - and for a good reason, not just for
historical reasons.
Please revert this madness.
