Their $TERM will usually be something like `xterm-256color`. Accordingly, this check was modified in the `skel`-package `/etc/skel/.bashrc` like this: case "$TERM" in xterm-color|*-256color) color_prompt=yes;; esac I would suggest the same modification be done in the base-files .bashrc.
