Attempts are made which means the policy method doesn't actually opt-out due to a bug. The file is not created by a package so you won't be asked if you want to overwrite the specific value or change it in the future for certain operations. The problem is three fold. One technical in the present, one future and one legal which encompasses both. Then read the actual policy - >How do you disable the collection? >Note that all of the system information may be shared with Canonical. If you >would prefer that Canonical does not receive any item of system information, >please do not consent to it being sent. You can disable this service as >follows: >/etc/default/motd-news has an ENABLED=1 setting that if set to 0 will turn off >this functionality. This implies that without changing the setting that you agree to collection. The file does not exist. The recent ESM servicing hook advertising and communication features are an example of future impact as it relates further into the scope of this policy. >Along with this data, the IP address and other network information is transmitted to facilitate communication on the internet from the Ubuntu machine to Canonical. This information is not stored by Canonical. This is clearly the one way we have to official opt-out for current and future consent. It isn't implemented correctly and cannot explicitly be accomplished in accordance with Canonical Group Limited's own written policy. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to base-files in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1956115 Title: ubuntu-advantage-tools ' MOTD is incompatible with Ubuntu Legal's MOTD opt-out directions. Status in base-files package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in ubuntu-advantage-tools package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: https://ubuntu.com/legal/motd This file does not exist in Jammy 22.04. This wouldn't be a problem if it was actually removable without having to build custom metapackages.
