I did not get the Friends app working anymore on the latest Ubuntu development version (15.04).
I made the attached QML test application that does show the characters correctly. I would assume it's true also for any other Qt application, which would point to the direction of this bug being fixed. If you download the attachment, and install a package called "qml", you should be able to run the app on the command line with "qml testcase.qml".
