What ever the problem was, it is now  fixed. Must have been fixed in one of the 
updates that were installed since the problem was reported.

Oh, you said that you have two icons; presumably the other one is from a
previously mounted DVD? Perhaps you ejected one using the eject button
on the drive? On 14.04 that would not automatically clean up the mounts
(bug 1281110). Does that also happen with the same DVD right after a
clean boot?

  blank DVD in drive and get report that it is already mounted. Two DVD
  icons are showen on task bar at left side of screen. Displaying DVD
  info get report that DVD size is 2.0Kb. Unable to select DVD drive to
  burn image.
