The relevant thing here is that the WHOLE SYSTEM stops responding and you can't even switch window, open a terminal, or close the offending application, in this case Libre OFfice. If a single buggy (or even malicious) application can cause the whole system to become unusable, there is a bug in the system itself. I can switch to a virtual console with ctrl+alt+f1 and kill the offending libreOffice process in this case, so I guess the issue is somewhere between Unity and X, rather than in linux. But this is only a guess.
