ok, downloaded vivid-desktop-i386.iso dated 2015-02-24 Tue 11:04:11, and booted it. it is different. the installer launches fine, xorg stays alive. but icons and buttons are all black, and when hovering over the taskbar the window previews that popup contain graphical nonsense. in a terminal i installed xdiagnose and python-apport. the installations completed successfully. i then launched "apport-collect -p xorg 1409222". the output is:
