invisible pointer on boot

Bug description:
Started up, logged in to gnome classic...got an error message about
/etc/profile (not sure if related, will try to reproduce)
...and no pointer. Hit the laptop-shortcut to enable/disable touchpad...it
did not come back. Plugged usb mouse in...still did not come back, but I
discovered I could right click and
