Update: tried it again on krillin 15.10 (r253) and there is a popup message telling me "Call holiding failure - failed to place the active call on hold". I am not sure but does it mean my service provider doesn't support placing calls on hold? Needs some investigating.

I tried to call both SIMs and on both it is not possible to put the accepted call on hold.
