Looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VCard, structured name (N) is required in all but v4.0, where formatted name (FN) is required in v3.0+, it seems that the locale/preference-aware formatting would have to happen when editing, and stored in FN.

So instead of "John Doe" it would be "Doe, John". For me this is quite crucial when it comes to business contacts where I more likely know the famillyname and not so much the firstname (yes, I could use the search, but that is slower). So it should be possible to display the names in the addressbook like "Famillyname, Firstname". Here is some information on wikipedia to that issue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_name#Order_of_names_and_use_of_articles This issue relates to bug #1215373 but is not the same.
