You did not use the Phono input ?

Other wise a pair of Rothwell -10dB attenuators would be useful (I use
them all over my hifi)

Or diy attenuators yourself for a couple of cents (it's two resistors
they all sound the same).
You also lower the percieved noise.

It's recommended when correcting directly to a power amp practice if
the power amp don't have any input level/gain adjustment .
It's very common with to much gain everywhere and to "hot" sources.

Best level off attenuation would be so that 100% volume would be as
loud as you ever want to go ( when sober ;) ) but not louder.
