This issue wasn’t even known until a few days ago when it was revealed
that “modified” machines and “not published” specs machines were being
used to extract DSD data from an SACD.

Apparently there are one or two boutique companies who are making these
machines (with some employee links between the companies) and one studio
doing the work. It’s low profile.

And the previous various contradictory and inconsistent explanations as
to the method and workflow involved in extracting the data can be
interpreted as:

1. A deliberate attempt at obfuscation because of a conscious knowledge
of these issues.
2. Unawareness or misunderstanding by those involved as to these
issues.
3. A desire to protect a “trade secret” as to the method of
extraction.

Of course whatever the reason, all these possibilities just further
reinforce the need for full disclosure to the consumer as to the source
of a music download and the method for its preparation.

All we can do is ask questions.
