sbs Squeezeboxserver must run on something/somewhere on the network.
If you all wired that's not really a problem, install the software on a
suitable machine.

Some NAS boxes can run sbs, check in the 3'rd party hardware forum
about the DS209, I think some people do run squeezeboxserver on
synology but iI don't know.
In general any "server" pc or NAS should have decent spec to give you a
good experience. I'd suggest something with x86 cpu and fpu unit >1 gHz
500mB Ram

1b. The Touch itself can run a "light" version of the software, but it
can only handle music directly connected via the USB port or SD card
slot not network shares.

1c. Hmm wonder if a symlink to an network share on the SD card would be
followed ?
