Lots of debate on toslink, but in the end it typically has less bandwidth than digital. A PCF toslink cable is what you want for any distance with less chance of damage. If you have groundloop issues and don't need to run over a few feet then toslink is ideal.
toslink is also more dependent on good components to eliminate jitter. Digital is much more likely to do 24/96 or 24/192. I use both.
