It is not my goal to be argumentative about the subject, but I do find
it interesting how many qualifiers  are required for the Touch to
behave in a reasonable manner with an external USB drive attached
directly to the unit. 

I'd understood the whole point of the Touch's internal server was to
create a consumer "plug and play" product. That has been far from the
case. It seems more "hit and miss" than "plug and play."

If there are specific hardware requirements in terms of make & model of
external hard drives, they should be clearly listed in the product
specs. I just checked - the instructions are clearly absent any special
restrictions. Likewise, there is no mention of any special settings
required.

when used in the traditional external Squeezeboxserver configuration. 

However, it is a real roll of the dice when the internal server is
used. I hope that gets better, though I have to wonder just how bad
things were last Christmas when they delayed introduction four months
to fix those issues.
