I an happy to report that the source of the distortion I have been hearing intermittently is not the Squeezebox system at all. It was a failing tube in my preamp! I guess I thought it was due to the Squeezebox network because I have been listening to little else lately.
While I was troubleshooting, I did wire everything with ethernet cable, but now I have it back all wireless and working well. I am very glad to be able to use wifi again. BTW this has involved extended intensive listening periods (the problem was intermittent) and an observation I made was how good the analog outputs from the Touch really are. I hadn't given them a good listen before.
