There is actually another reason which in home stereo systems usually makes more difference than the noise rejection. It has to do with ground currents between boxes. Unless you are using batteries there WILL be leakage current from the AC mains (even if two prong) through parasitic capacitances of the power supply to the shield of the interconnect. These leakage currents will flow through the interconnect shield to other boxes. On single ended connections the signal voltage is referenced to the shield so the voltage induced because of this leakage current is added directly to the audio signal. With a balanced interconnect the signal voltage is between the two inner wires, not the shield. The shield still carries the leakage current but the signal is not directly related to it. This decrease in noise is usually much greater than that from the CMRR of the inner wires. As our AC mains get noisier with switching power supplies, microwave ovens, light dimmers etc this effect is more and more important to high quality sound reproduction.
