I'm sure the cheap adapter can't be doing you any favors.

I originally had the touch connected with optical. I can't tell any
difference, but I know that S/PDIF over coax seems more forgiving of
the cable. By that I mean, based on reading only, it seems that one can
have troublesome issues with the optical cable itself. Again, mine was
fine with optical, and from a sound point of view I hear no difference.
But I didn't try to formally ABX any differences.

p.s. For a Benchmark DAC-I, I use for other purposes (NOT connected
with my TOUCH or Transporter), I also connect on the input side via
coax. Although that does have a proper 75ohm BNC connector.
