I second the VortexBox appliance. It is about the easiest thing on the planet to setup and use.
Take it out of the box, use an ethernet cable to plug into your router, plug in the power cord, turn it on. Thats it. It will now show up as a network drive on any computer on the network. Copy files over into the drive. On a browser on a computer type in "VORTEXBOX", this gives you the vortexbox main menu, click on the SBS button, this brings up the SBS page, click on settings, then rescan. Wait until the scan is complete. You can now play music from any squeezebox on the network. It comes with an optical drive for ripping CDs right on the box. If you don't already have the CDs ripped you can do it right there. Put the CD in the drive, it automatically rips, gets song info and cover art from the internet and rescans the database all without any interaction from you, just put in the CD. Of course if you want to do ripping and more sophisticated tagging etc on another computer you are free to do so. Just copy the files over to the vortexbox drive and rescan the SBS library. It can also be used as a general purpose NAS box for other computers, a DLNA server, a video server etc. You can rip DVDs to its drive. A very useful box to have. And its on sale right now.
