+1, I'm also looking for a nice solution for this! I usually just plug the USB HDD into my PC to copy music on it. I tried NFS but I had some problems with the file permissions (wrong file owner). Haven't had time to solve those. You might be able to set the username/password for samba in the samba config files on your sheevaplug, somewhere in /etc/samba/smb.conf or similar. Maybe you can have a look there. Just my 2 cents.
