No it's does not, computer comunication is pretty robust. It's asynchronous error corrected and buffered it's the same ethernet ip methods that can send a file across the whole internet from the other side of the world without any errors in it.
Not the same as spdif or toslink for example that are realtime timing critical and old standards. You can think about it this way ip packets is only data not a "signal" yet that can have impact on the audio quality. Bad wifi shows as drop outs and rebuffering when the squeezebox internal buffer gets empty. So it can give you piece of mind to use a cable as wifi can be unpredictable in urban areas if you neighbors disturbs your network for example.
