Can be another thing entirerly.
Is it not simply to keep the volume at 100% all the time ? rg uses the
squeezebox volume to achieve it's thing, meaning that even if you have
the squeezebox volume at 100% it is not really 100% if you have
replaygain on and files with rg tags, it's more like 85-90% ish ? that
could be wrong but typically rg drops the volume -10dB . so a price for
using rg is lower s/n , the volume is digital so it would also affect
people using a DAC or processor the following DAC would not use it's
most significant bits and thus also have lower s/n ratio, 24 bit files
would no be 24 bit anymore and DTS or dolby coded files would not
function if you are using an HT processor.

So there always been a small cost to absolute soundquality using rg.
I have processor that does room correction and other things so I prefer
to have my volume adjusted in one place my Meridian processor which I
believe have a better volume control .

Also consider the latest fad with some audiophiles DAC built around the
old phillips TDA 1541 or similar 16bit multibit dac's (NOS DAC) .
These DAC's does not have 24bits to toy with the Touch volume control
operates with 24bit but such DAC conected directly would actually
truncate bits as soon as you use rg or volume ?
Also you get the old linearity problem as the smaller bits are harder
to get to rigth size in such dac.
More modern DAC's with delta sigma or similar "1" bit approach does not
suffer that much from this non-linearity (thats why they where
invented).
But "only" with loss of s/n ratio .

There is of course a good argument against my reasoning here the fact's
that most recordings needing large negative replay gain is severely
destroyed in the loudness war and have massive compression and sound
quite bad anyway so no one would actually notice.

But technically rg uses the Touch's volume using the volume gives
slightly lower s/n ratio if this can be heard in isolation I got no
idea but it's not made up it's a real effect, so in the hunt for the
last bit of sound-quality you migth turn it off .

many hifi products simply have to much gain so most people have to much
gain in their systems i think this emphasize noise problem in source
components, maybe this makes it more audible than intended ?
