On the SB Touch there are three logical "devices", a controller, a player and a server. The server is the only one that sees files (wherever they are) the player just talks to a server, it never sees files directly, and the controller part just talks to servers as well. So the player part can never "look at the USB port", all it can do is be pointed at a server. If you have a server running on a separate computer you can switch the Touch between the builtin server, the external server and mysqueezebox.com. Even if you connect the player to the builtin server it will still TRY and make a connection to a network (wired or wireless) so that you have the option of connecting to mysqueezebox.com for network streams. Its not required for use of the builtin server but it at least try's to make the connection so its up and running if you want to use it.
