I doubt that disabling precaching is going to help.  That's really just
a way to speed up scanning (at the expense of performance the first
time you access resized images).

Artwork scanning and caching in 7.6 is much better than with prior
versions.  It's much more accurate, less fiddly, and faster.  It may be
worth installing 7.6, even though it's still beta software.  You just
need to be aware that the server does have a few bugs and how to work
around them.
