I have been using usb external disk drives with the Touch, formatted either NTFS or ext3. I at first had problems with huge artwork images and multiple artwork files. Since cleaning up my collection being careful with filenames (NTFS on Windows cannot handle ":", for example, although this is POSIX valid and legal with ntfs-3g), I have had no problems. My collection is pretty big (and still growing): 11665 tracks 240Gb. I am pretty happy now. Perhaps, if you were to patiently describe your problems using a usb disk, someone might be able to help you.
