There's no doubt that SBS will find the artwork in the first place, but
if you happen to replace the artwork file when you find a higher quality
version, for example, SBS will not pick up the change unless you alter
the timestamps on the FLAC files unless you do a full clear and
rescan.

That's the advantage of embedding the images in FLAC files for SBS - it
will detect changes to the images as though it's a normal tag amendment
using scan for new and changed.
