Got a bit of an unpleasant shocker yesterday. Came home from work, eager
to listen to some nice tunes on my system. Started playing some albums,
and got startled with a very unpleasant sounding presentation. Harsh
glare, thin midrange, loud but at the same time somehow shallow and
abrasive bass. What the...?

Something sounded seriously broken. My heart sank. I'm in love with my
audio system, and to hear it broken like that... well, I don't have to
explain how hard it was on me.

Anywho, started doing a bit of troubleshooting. It did happen to me on
several previous occasions (throughout a number of years) that my
preamp would get to the point of sounding muddy (this happened very
rarely). All it takes is to turn it off and back on, and the muddiness
gets cleared away. So I tried it last night -- no effect. I turned my
power amp off and back on -- same difference. I did the same to my
outboard DAC -- no change.

Finally, unplugged my Touch, plugged it back in, and voila! the sound
returned to normal. Full bodied, sweet bass, rich midrange, silky, airy
highs.

So what gives? Why did Touch end up sounding so toxic all of a sudden?
Any explanation?
