You should also consider what you are running through, and how you use
it.  What I mean is, most AV receivers do digital processing for many
(most) of their opperating modes.  Therefore if you send it an analog
signal (via RCAs), when running in these modes it will digitize the
signal, do its processing, and then convert back to analog with its own
DACs.  If you have this type of receiver, and use any digital processing
(I believe if you use the internal crossover to output to a subwoofer,
the crossover is usually digital, so that case would be included) then
it probably makes sense to send the signal digitally to the receiver. 
Most AV receivers do have modes to bypass any digital processing, but
as stated above, that eliminates ANY special processing and probably
the ability to run the subwoofer.
