Thanks to all for your suggestions. With hope and expectation, I looked to see if the optical light was flashing red, tried the reset option, touched the screen, glared at it ;), no luck, unfortunately :(
I would not be surprised if it's the power supply that's the problem; the slide in power outlet plug connection looks very flimsy.
