I agree that running SBS on an external server is generally more reliable than using the Touch's built-in server (TinySBS).
However, if you choose to use TinySBS then it is easy to avoid the hassles of disconnecting, reconnecting, rescanning, etc. There is absolutely no need to disconnect the USB drive from the Touch to update your music library. The Touch also runs Samba file server software, so when the USB drive is attached to the Touch it will also appear as a drive on your network.
