Look at custom clock applet- I believe it supports some custom VU meters. There are pre-made screens, and you can create personal screensaver. My screens on the Radio are custom - both my "when off" screensaver (shows large clock, weather information from SuperDateTime), and my "now playing" screensaver which has larger-than-normal clock, cover art which is augmented by LastFM images of the artist. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68269&highlight=customclock
