Like many customers, I came to the conclusion that TinySBS is not
acceptable in its current state.
However I really cannot understand why 2 small improvements which could
make it acceptable where never performed, and how beta testers could
have used Touch standalone without ever figuring out.

First of all there is this bug "Enable turn off autoscanning on
tinysc"
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16564
If you think this is good idea (and probably very easy to fix), the
only way to hope getting (may be ...) some attention from Logitech is
to vote for bugs.
There are currently 9 votes, and it is obviously not enough for
Logitech to think about fixing it.

The second idea is the one which was discussed in this thread
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90063&page=4
The idea is to ask that TinySBS (and why not SBS ?) behave like almost
any other software and provide a "browse folders only" mode without any
kind of scan (may be 99% of customer's problems) and database creation
or query.
How many Squeezebox customers think it could be good idea and deserve
another bug ?

When I plug a USB stick on the Touch, I would usually be satisfied with
folders browsing, and don't care about any scan or database feature.
I copy below some statements I made in the other thread.

------
from http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=654984&postcount=34

"The most stupid thing in this story is the following :

- I have a computer with internal SSD and Windows 7 x64
- I boot it faster than a Touch
- Almost every information used for basic and daily search are present
in the file names of my flac files
- The search field of Windows 7 file explorer (with SSD, indexing
disabled to save SSD life) allow me to find almost instantly whatever I
want without using tags ...

This means that for me a simple software with an "Open file" button to
select music files and send them to the Touch, would be better, faster
and more user friendly than SBS database browsing (no scan needed, you
are in paradise !) ...

When you have a computer available, the number one basic method to
choose a file on it, is to browse your folders ...

Allow SBS or TinySBS to disable any scan whatsoever, and provide simple
folder browsing, you get something simple 99% of people will use without
any hassle ...

When a friend brings you a file, why should it be more complicated than
bringing a CD ?
(I forgot that, a friend can bring a CD, you rip it, and use the files,
it still happens sometimes)

Now tell him than with TinySBS, you will have to rescan (how many hours
?) your disk if you disconnect it to connect and play your friend's usb
stick.
Tell him you have to copy his file in the specific music folder for
SBS, and wait for the scan (why do you need to scan, you just copied it
and already forgot where it is ????, why don't you simply click on it to
play it ???? ) ...
Any sensible person will ask you if you are not insane ...

TinySBS should simply not run a database, it should browse folders,
that's all and that's enough ...
SBS should have an option to disable database and provide simple folder
browsing through windows file explorer.

Which other music softwares than SBS are missing those obvious and
basic features, everybody understand and use without problems ???"

"Apparently no developer ever thought that providing "browse folder
only" could be a useful workaround for all those who are stuck with
scanning problems (either in SBS or in TinySBS)
In my opinion, their biggest mistake was to be so confident in their
hype features (scan, autorescan, database browsing, etc ...) that they
totally wiped out any basic feature which could be satisfying
workaround for a lot of customers completely stuck, because those "hype
features" are not reliable enough.
Every other software I have used still support those basic features,
and so, nobody can be totally stuck with no workaround available."
