I'm pretty sure the behaviour you're seeing is due to memory issues. I've  
been able to reproduce such crashes if the interval was rather short, not  
leaving enough time for SP to run the garbage collection.

Check the messages file on the device (either log in or use the file  
sharing, both options you can find in Settings/Advanced). You'd find  
references to OOM (out of memory) in there.

Hmm... then I'm surprised you'd get the "Local Music Service Stopped"  
message.

What you could do to prevent this issue:

- pre-shrink the images to a smaller size, max. 272x480px, or
- use my Gallery plugin on your server (it does resize the artwork on the  
server), or
- use 7.7 which has some image browsing built in
