1. Personally I prefer a PC because it is not "locked". In terms of performance I would not like something slower than a ATOM CPU. Some people are satisfied with less.
In terms of power usage ATOM and Brazo are the low end, but actually Intel i3 and AMD Llano series can get down to 30 watt. And they can have higher performance if needed. Off cause an old laptop is also low power by nature e.g a used laptop with a defect monitor would be fine. On a technical level a x86 based CPU is god because it have a good floating point and is supported by almost everything... or seeing it from the other side; some of the CPUs used in the smaller NAS does not support all features offered by the Squeeze solution. In a NAS also pay attention to the amount of RAM... if it have an ATOM or higher CPU it would also have minimum 1 GB RAM. 2. It is normally recommended to have your server/NAS cabled for 2 reasons: 1. The music does not have to travel over the wireless twice. This is an old advice and can have merit if your wireless signal is borderline. 2. a cabled server/NAS makes it possible to make it Wake On Lan (WOL). The server sleeps but wakes up when it receives a WOL package from the Controller/app or Squeezebox. This is not possible on wireless. -- slate Main: Receiver (Audiocom) -> Beresford Caiman+ (Gatorized) -> Carver A-500x -> B&W 704 Office: Receiver -> Luxman L-210 -> Stax SR84 Pro/Superlux HD668B Server: Zotac IONITX-A, 4 GB, 1 TB WD EADS, Win7 w. 7.6 (SQLite w.
