Most decent NAS'es have x86 proc. these days. There's a good change that these NAS'es have more proc power than an old retired laptop you buy for $50. Besides that, a NAS is a setup and forget kind of device. No OS patches or service packs to install every week or so. There is also power considerations. NAS'es are built to run 24/7 and have power tweaking settings. The old laptop will probably consume a lot more power. -- Pascal Hibon 1 x SB3, 1 x SB Boom, 1 x SB Radio and 1 x SB Touch - all wireless ReadyNAS NVX running SBS iPeng on iPod Touch.
