I probably should add that the transcoding thing I was talking about
only occurs when the less capable player is turned on.
As long as it's powered off, the more capable player should receive the
high resolution file untouched from the server.

Your "skipping" issues may well be caused by the fact you're - possibly
accidentally - turning on the Receiver while playing music on the
Touch.
When a player joins a sync group, it will cause a brief audio drop out,
the time the newcomer's buffer get filled enough. It usually won't take
more than 0.5 - 1 second, but if transcoding is required, it could
easily take up to 5 seconds, the time the server get the file
transcoded up to where it was playing before the player joined the
party.
