I had exactly the same problem - music service stopping for some unknown reason. For the last 24 hours I could only scan in half a dozen albums or so (and had to move most of my data into a folder starting with a full-stop to prevent it scanning) or else the music service stopped while scanning.
My fix: I did a factory reset, then went to Settings and downloaded and installed the latest firmware again.
