I'm using the kernel 4 and the result is the same (can't avoid the
reboot loop)
Which manual mods do you mean (the ones I'm making to the settnigs
file)?

I've been doing a little more digging.

I can't get the DAC to play from ssh using aplay, for example:

# aplay -D hw:1,0 /tmp/track02.wav
Playing WAVE '/tmp/track02.wav' : Signed 24 bit Little Endian in
3bytes, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
aplay: set_params:1022: Unable to install hw params:
ACCESS: RW_INTERLEAVED
FORMAT: S24_3LE
SUBFORMAT: STD
SAMPLE_BITS: 24
FRAME_BITS: 48
CHANNELS: 2
RATE: 44100
PERIOD_TIME: (125011 125012)
PERIOD_SIZE: 5513
PERIOD_BYTES: 33078
PERIODS: (3 4)
BUFFER_TIME: 500000
BUFFER_SIZE: 22050
BUFFER_BYTES: 132300
TICK_TIME: 0

presumably this needs to work properly?

Doing the same thing from my laptop (with the same audio track) it
works ok:

jacko@mpc540:~$ aplay -D hw:1,0 ./Desktop/track02.wav -v
Playing WAVE './Desktop/track02.wav' : Signed 24 bit Little Endian in
3bytes, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo

Its setup is:

jacko@mpc540:~$

While playing on the laptop the output of cat
/proc/asound/card1/stream0 gives:

is this down to the version of alsa? or are you bypassing alsa
completely? I was trying to get it to work by fiddling with the aplay
command line options.
