The answer probably largely depends on your eyesight and whether or not it allows you to see a 7" screen fine from the anticipated distance away.
I use a 7" Blackberry Playbook (awesome unit BTW) with my Squeezeboxen and it works tremendously well. However I use it more as a remote rather than a simple display unit. I also have a larger sized iPad but find it to be too large and clumsy when used as a remote unit.
