I would check the health of the hard drive. I'd had hard drives getting ready to fail that would lock up for a few seconds on access, get some data, and then lock up again on the next access. Try rebooting the Vortexbox. If it takes an unusually long time this would be an indication of hard drive problems or file system corruption. It's also possible that a reboot will fix the problem if the file system is corrupted, since a scan is run on boot.
