I've got two touches running in dimmed mode ; so, the time out is set to the shortest period possible, and the screen is black after that timeout, during playback, when on pause, etc. However, I notice that when I play an album, and the album ends, the Touch's screen "lights up", but without content. So, during playback it's actually off, but when the player turns off, it turns back on, but black. The LCD backlight lights up the entire bedroom. Same for the player in the livingroom.
Also, when I turn either one of the touches off via iPeng, initially they turn on the backlight. A second time turning them on and off fixes this. If I turn them off on-screen, or via the IR remote, it works right away.
