How is it formatted ? touch won't do HFS ( OSX standard format ) How many partitions, Touch will only see the first one and the music must be there .
Many external drives is filled with junk software and often an extra small partition with even more junk , emulating a cd drive at conection with a pc etc . So step 1 in getting any drive is to reformat it to one partition and rid it if this junk :) drives and usb sticks are a commodity and brands are desperate to profile themselfs with fancy design ( ok ) junk software who's only purpose is to produce a tray icon and a desktop icon with the brand name ( not so ok ) It also prefers drives with thier own power supply or sometimes using a powered USB hub can help .
