Actually I second that. I'm doing the same thing and this way I get the best of both worlds: a NAS with really fast disc access and a server with decent performance. I also all of a sudden have no problems with powering down the hard drives anymore, they go to sleep when the server stops using the disc, even if the SBs are still running (e.g. when I listen to Spotify or something).
I know I strongly recommended against this setup 5 years ago but compared to then a significant element has changed: the network interfaces on modern NAS boxes (even relatively cheap ones) with gigabit Ethernet have become actually faster than at least USB 2.0 or PCI hard drives so network access is no longer a bottleneck. That said: this only holds true if you actually use a wired gigabit network. Doing this over WiFi will dramatically hit performance and even 100MBit Ethernet will slow things down considerably. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and *New: Logitech UE Smart Radio* as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100234 _______________________________________________ Touch mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
