As long as you don't get drop outs any of them are fast enough and the
quality will be the same if the file can be read .

If there is a difference ( which is unlikely ) the explanation must be
something else , power demand on the 5v for USB , noise from the USB
drive . Noise from the USB drive PSU ? That effects the hifi as a whole
?

If the Touch can't power the usb drive you get failed scans and
possibly buffer underuns when playing ( that's a difference it's gets
totally silent ) .

But before hunting for an explanation or test listening SD cards ?

Do a reality check and do an ab or abx listening test or if you are
technically skilled an audio diffmaker test ( very cool software if one
has a good soundcard ,it enables you to make high quality measurements
at home ) with an abx test you can determine if any one can hear it at
all, with the diffmaker test ( or any other good measurement ) you can
find if it's difference at all below the threshold of human hearing .

The AB or ABX listening test will remove the perceptional bias , the "in
the head factor" . In can be tricky to set up maybe you have to use two
Touches or make a symlink on one of the media IF the onboard server does
not crash when two media are inserted :) a simple not super scientific
AB test is to make a playlist with 10 of each test file and then press
shuffle .
