Hi,

I own a Squeezebox Touch for 3 years now. I've always used the internal
server with a 64GB USB flash drive connected to the Touch directly.
Files are mostly flac, but also some OGG and MP3. It works well,
basically, but about once or twice the internal server crashes. When
that happens, the filesystem (FAT32) of the flash drive gets corrupted
occassionally, too, which means I have to fix it and rescan the whole
library. Firmware is 7.8.0 but I haven't noticed a difference in this
respect compared to 7.7.3. Therefore I'm thinking about using an
external server to stream my music to the Touch.

What are your expereiences with external servers compared to the
internal server of the Touch? Are there downsides to using an external
server? How about stability of the external server, especially on arm
based devices running linux? How about performance and music quality?

I have a spare Pogoplug v3 device running Debian Squeeze. I installed
Logitech Media Server 7.8.0 on it yesterday and got it working quickly.
My initial impressions are: 1) Scanning the whole library is much faster
than on the Touch (less than 10mins compared to 30-40mins). 2) Browsing
through artists/albums and playing music works well and with about the
same speed as on the Touch. 3) Browsing the music folder is slower, but
I don't really need that. 4) Accessing the web interface could be faster
(opening the page in firefox takes almost 10s first, but subsequent
actions only lag a little). But of course, I don't have any longterm
experience.

I'm also asking this because I wouldn't want to run an extra server
(consuming power) if there's no real benefit over the internal one. As I
said, my main concern is stability so I'm hoping to hear what your
experiences are.

Thanks,

Timo

P.S.: Just to give you the "full" picture: I also have a swap file in
place on the Touch to avoid out of memory errors. Otherwise the internal
server would crash more often. The Pogoplug features a 700MHz dual core
ARMv6 processor and 128MB RAM. So the processor should be much faster
but RAM is little, too (a swap file is in place on the Pogoplug as
well).
