Fizbin / johtem thanks for the input. I was very careful to make sure the adapters I tried were correct. I actually tried my Classic 3 one first (5v same plug but only 2a) and when nothing happened I then tried the 2.5a one. Polarity is correct. I think the original adapter "dying" might be the cause of the problem. I have also had a message saying that the touch will work with the classic 3 adaptor (as long as no usb drive etc attached) - so looks like the extra ampage is not the issue.
However I don't understand why the red light on the digital optical out still flashes - seems to suggest that the unit is not 100% dead. So I'm now trying to find out if there is some way to get the unit to go through the start-up routine like a duet receiver and then use it "headless". I will start a new thread with that question.
