I do not think there is anything definitive on this topic. There are just too many variables within any given library.
I ran my Touch that way for about a year. My attached drive probably had in the neighborhood of 20K tracks at that point. Nothing but problems and any time the Touch was powered off it had to rescan the entire library. Nothing but headaches. Attaching the HDD w the library to a PC running LMS just works and works well.
