Interesting. I've had lots of experience of kit dying that's very often down to simply replacing the "wall wart" to get it going again. Also, as they approach their end of life, the voltage often drops off slowly, affecting different parts of the device over time, starting with those parts that are obviously more sensitive to the voltage drop. I've found that you can't tell if the PSU's duff by simply checking at it's plug, as if usually will only show the low voltage when loaded.
